The Peace Institute Forum

"NATO, What is the Security We Need?"

The Sixth Forum of the Peace Institute conveyed on November 20th in Cankarjev Dom.

Tonci Kuzmanic, researcher at the Peace Institute, talked to the following participants:

  • Dr Vlado Miheljak, sociologist and political analyst;

  • Dr Milan Jazbec, state secretary at Ministry of Defense;

  • Blaž Babič, member of the group Neutro.

We have thought through the dimensions of the question of security for Slovenia and the types of danger Slovenia could potentially face. What type of army does Slovenia need in relation to its security status? What forms of security would access to Nato guarantee Slovenia? We have tried to establish the costs and benefits of participation in Nato in relation to other strategies of international security co-operation. How much would Nato membership actually cost and what would Slovenia get in exchange? What are the possible alternatives to Nato membership and what is the potential for Slovenia’s active neutrality?
